Big Canoe Tour of Homes

Big Canoe has been well known for its “Tour of Homes” for decades, and after a three-year hiatus, the Tour is back, bigger and better than ever. Thisis the 30th year that the Big Canoe Chapel Women’s Guild through the Legacy of Caring has supported charities in Pickens and Dawson counties. These events have raised more than $1,700,000, and every penny of this year’s proceeds will be donated to charities who focus on the well-being of women and children.

Big Canoe homes run the gambit from quaint, rustic log cabins to executive estates, and on May 18 and 19, guests will have the pleasure of viewing five unique homes in this idyllic North Georgia mountain community. One of the homes, named as the Designer Home of the Year, has two stories with an elevator, and it sits on a gorgeous lot with a magnificent view of Lake Petit the marina and Eagle Island. Another Big Canoe lake home is a delightful Saga Log cabin built in old world style with Douglas fir logs and chinking inside and out. The home is entered through a beautiful woodland garden.

The other three homes are located in the newer Big Canoe Wildcat Recreation area. The first is a custom-built contemporary cottage featuring a four-season porch with retractable windows and a 6,000 gallon salt water pool and spa. Next, aptly named “4 Seasons,” is a Colorado craftsman home highlighted by large wooden columns and beams with stacked stone accents. A dry riverbed with a stone bridge allows access to the rear of the house. The largest home, a mountain modern design called “The Haven,” has 6 bedrooms and 6 ½ baths. It features an outdoor swimming area, a bocce court and outdoor fireplace. All of these homes are occupied by fulltime Big Canoe residents.

All of the planning and work for the Legacy of Caring events is done by hundreds of Big Canoe volunteers, and over 200 hosts and hostesses who greet and direct visitors through the homes live in the Big Canoe community.

Timed Tour tickets cost $30, and advance on-line purchase is recommended at www.bigcanoelegacy.org. Tickets can also be purchased in Big Canoe the days of the Tour. From the Big Canoe North entrance gate, signs will lead you to the Chapel parking lots. Shuttle buses will transport ticket holders from the Chapel to the homes. Plan to start your tour no later than 1:00 pm to see all five homes. Tour homes close at 4:00 pm on both days.

Your ticket includes the Legacy Marketplace where dozens of juried vendors will be set up indoors and out with an intriguing variety of high quality, but affordable treasures. You’ll find a huge assortment of exceptionally well-priced books at the Book Nook. The Collectors’ Corner offers the finest in gently used accessories for home and entertaining. Take home a sweet from the Bear Paw Bakery. Breakfast and lunch will be available at the Crazy Bear Café.
